Poison Promise

The book is a nice stand alone story about Gin having to jump in to help battling a ruthless drug lord who of course also happens to be a vampire and an elemental just to make things more interesting. I said stand alone. Well that is what it looked like until the last 10 percent of the book. Then the author manages to tie the entire story into both the past and the future for Gin. Still the book have a well-defined start and end with that sense of closure of the current story, usually involving a few violent deaths, that I like in a book.
The majority of the book is pretty much the same stuff that we have in most of the previous books like Gin being a bad-ass, the goth dwarf drooling every time Gin creates a bit of a clean-up job for her, the rather entertaining bantering between Gin, Finn, Owen and other characters. Naturally there are regular outbursts of violence and a few setbacks along the line. In short the book have the things that I at least have come to like with this series in healthy doses.
There are of course some parts of the books that I did not like so much. Mostly Bria’s obsession with catching the bad guy which borders on stupidity. I never like stories where normally intelligent characters are turned into idiots just to make a story work. The whining, patting everyone on their backs and telling everyone that it was not their faults but really mine etc. etc. after she finally had come to her senses again is also something that puts me off. Well you cannot have everything can you? The book is still a very enjoyable one for the most part.
As I mentioned above the last 10% of the book are…interesting. On these last pages the author manages to tie the events that have taken place in the past into the events that takes place in this book as well as making the reader in the face with some huge teasers of things to come. The later part is certainly mission accomplished in that I really want to read the next book now. However, at the same time I am not entirely happy about how things got set up. To some extent it feels like we’re back to square one for certain things just with new characters. Actually at least one of the characters is not even new and that really annoys me because he is the character that I found to be the most irritating and annoying little prick around in the early books.
Well, I guess we will just have to wait and se how things goes now. I for sure are going to eagerly wait for the next one.
